Hi Stefano,
Here is some information to help you collect measurements for bass strings.
Some tips:
The piano action can be moved forward to give you access to the space behind it for measuring. There are 12 fasteners holding it in place:
4 screws holding the strip that runs in front of the keys. Remove the screws, and remove the strip. Screws are accessible from under the keybed.
4 Large screws securing the action to the keybed. Screws are accessible from under the keybed
4 knurled finger nuts securing the top of the action to the frame of the piano.
Once these fasteners are removed, the action can be moved far enough forward to facilitate the measurements. You will probably also need to lift out a dowel coming up from the left pedal. I think yours in in the normal position, on the left end of the action.
The “hitch pin to . . . “ measurements are taken with the loop on the tape measure on the hitch pins. The speaking length is best measured by placing the loop of the tape measure on the upper bridge pin, rather than simply calculating from previous measurements.
If any data I have pre-entered on the sheet is incorrect, by all means correct it.
Some of the lowest strings will have a double layer of copper windings. If you can discern which these are, record the information in the appropriate column. If not, don’t worry about it.
I have included a diagram and sheets for recording your data. You can access them and print them out using the following links.
